Technical FAQ
Everything you need to know about how 4KFilmDb analyzes and scores 4K movies โ including Dolby Vision, Atmos, bitrates, HDR metadata and more. This FAQ is actively maintained and updated as new features and refinements are introduced.
Content Score
How is the content score calculated?
We average multiple public ratings โ IMDb, Letterboxd, Rotten Tomatoes (Critics + Audience) and Metacritic โ into a single /100 score.
What qualifies as a 4KFilmDb Pick?
A movie typically needs a content score above 63/100, along with at least one quality highlight (e.g. strong HDR, Atmos or Native 4K).
Dolby Vision Analyzer
What does the Dolby Vision Analyzer evaluate?
Each movie is scored across 6 categories (1โ10):
- HDR Contrast & Highlights
- Black Levels & Shadow Detail
- Color Depth & Accuracy
- Tone Mapping Performance
- Clarity & Detail
- Compression & Artifacts
Do you use MaxCLL and MaxFALL?
Yes. These HDR metadata values support our evaluations and help compare streaming vs UHD disc mastering.
Dolby Atmos Analyzer
How is Atmos performance scored?
We use a 6-point scoring system:
- Dialogue Clarity
- Surround Usage
- Dynamic Range
- Loudness & Peaks
- Immersion
- Bass Presence
Are actual dB levels measured?
Yes, the Atmos score is informed by consistent equipment and reference mixes. However, the final rating also includes a layer of subjective listening to reflect real-world immersion and dynamics.
HDR & Metadata
What HDR formats are supported?
Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and fallback to SDR when no HDR layer is present.
How is HDR metadata captured?
HDR metadata (such as MaxCLL and MaxFALL) is captured through authorized HDMI signal analysis tools intended for home theater diagnostics and calibration, specifically using an HDFury Integral2 device. No movie content is duplicated or altered in this process โ only metadata fields are observed. This ensures that all measurements are objective, playback-based and intended purely for informational purposes.
Native 4K vs Upscaled
What is considered Native 4K?
Titles mastered with a true 4K Digital Intermediate (DI) and not upscaled from 2K.
How is this verified?
Through Digital Intermediate (DI) listings, official press materials and cross-referencing with cinematography databases such as IMDb.
Bitrate & Compression
Do you analyze streaming bitrates?
Yes โ we log peak and average bitrate where possible. Sources include Apple TV Dev tools and Netflix debug overlays.
What bitrate is considered โgreatโ?
- ๐ข > 20 Mbps = Great
- ๐ก 10โ20 Mbps = Good
- ๐ด < 10 Mbps = Low
Smart Lists & Filters
What are Smart Lists?
Curated, dynamic lists that highlight:
- Must-Watch Picks
- Best Atmos Titles
- Brightest HDR Experiences
- Hidden Reference Gems
Can I filter by region?
Yes. All major tools support filtering by US, UK, CA, AU along with global availability.
Can I combine filters?
Absolutely โ stack filters like "Dolby Vision + Native 4K + Australia" to narrow results.
Limitations & Data Sources
Are all movies fully analyzed?
We prioritize new releases, trending titles and high-request movies. Metadata for some older titles may be limited.
Can users contribute or correct info?
