How this works
- Each TV has two measured numbers from published TV reviews: how bright it gets on small highlights, and how bright it stays on a full white screen.
- Each disc has a reported peak and average brightness (its MaxCLL and MaxFALL), taken from published disc reviews.
- Fully reproduced: both fit within your TV. Tone mapped: your TV compresses part of the range, which every TV does with most HDR discs. Heavy compression: the disc is several times brighter than your TV can show.
- Dolby Vision discs carry scene-by-scene instructions for tone mapping. On a TV that supports Dolby Vision, they're counted as tone mapped at most.
- Some discs report a peak of exactly 1,000 nits, which is often a default value rather than a measurement, so those are marked. Discs reporting 10,000 nits, the format's ceiling, are left out.
- This shows how much your TV has to compress a disc, not a preview of the picture. Dynamic tone mapping, HGIG and each TV's own processing change the result on screen.
- Only discs with brightness data appear here: the measured discs so far, and the list grows as more are measured.
